Painting using spray cans/pressure packs

Guys,

Im after some general painting advice, particularly using pressure packs. I can get a reasonable finish using a pressure pack but no matter how well I seem to prep things I always have some kind of orange peel effect in the finish. Here is an example:



This was stripped to bare metal, hit with 180, primed, 320'd then 400'd then 600'd, then 2 coats of colour.

How would you take this to the next level of nice glossy finishes? Hit it with some 1200? 600? A cutting compound?

Any tips appreciated...

1500 you reckon? should i start with a coarser grade and work up to it? i dunno if 1500 will do much apart from take off the gloss? more paint after the 1500 or just clear?

i want to give it a few layers of clear to make sure it stays shiny...

Get a fine grit wet sand paper and give it a going over with some water to smooth it out then clear coat it.

1500 will take peel out, but you have to be careful not to rub through...of course then you will need to clear it to get the gloss back.

Hit it with 4-5 layers of clear!!

Pressure packs are made from acrylic paint and acrylic needs to be buffed to get any sort of decent shine. You could minimize the orange peel by submerging the spray cans in warm water for a few minutes before you paint, this will help it atomize better while your spraying.

Once it's dry hit it with some 1500 like everyone's saying, normally I'd use 1200 but acrylic is softer than 2k paint. Don't use one of the autobarn spec orbital 'buffers/polishers', they are crap. Bunnings used to sell an Ozito variable speed 7" sander/polisher that was fairly cheap and with a wool or foam pad and some proper compound from a auto paint shop, it'll turn out pro.

i was hoping doug would reply thanks mate.

despite my fears id **** the finish up, i hit it with 1200 last night. it lost the shine straight away so i hope the clear layers will bring the deep gloss back. anyway the peel was pretty deep (i had 3 or so layers of colour on there, and didnt sand between each coat) so i switched to 600 then worked up to 1200. i rubbed through some bits (the raised bits are a PITA) which pissed me off, but i kept going over it until i was happy it was smooth then gave it another 2 coats of colour. it dried up MUCH better than last time - but still slightly peely. if i was lazy id clear it now, its close enough. but i think i will sand it again first.

i cant find fucking 1500 paper ANYWHERE. i tried 3 hardware stores in the city and autobarn AND my local bunnings. finest i can get is 1200. so, two questions:

1. you reckon i should keep looking or just use 1200?
2. are you saying to buff the paint before i clear it or to clear it then buff it?

i only have an autobarn spec buffer at home, might go looking for that 7". im itching to get the car back on the road but dont wanna take shortcuts. painting takes so much time! waiting for shit to dry sucks ass.

If you go to a automotive paint supplier store you will find 1500 there.

close, but that aint in the city. ill go to a speed shop on the w/e but i wanted to prep during the week to paint on saturday. this is OT, and im asking for paint advice!

a stones throw requires a car and/or a lunch break long enough to get there, both of which i dont have. hence why i said IN THE CITY. im ok, but are you illiterate?

Autobarn usually has paper up to 2000 grit. The city store is probably a bit limited compared to the usual ones though. After sanding the colour coat I would just buff it and not worry about the clear. Don't sand the edges if you can help it, you won't notice them once the whole lot is buffed, the buffer will take a bit of peel out too.
