Introduce yourself and your ride.

Hey I'm new.

Postby TEaaron » July 11th, 2008, 9:38 pm

Hey guys how you goin?

New to the forums, been on one of your cruises before in a mates car.

So any way, I'm Aaron, I'm 18.
I'm mostly into 250's and euro cars.

I've got my jag up for sale and am looking for a EB-ED xr6 or xr8 manual.

I've driven a xr6 and they aint bad for a bit of a thrash.

My question is really what would be the better car to go for.
XR6 or XR8?
Manual is a must and it will be a daily driver with some mild mods.

For the sound: XR8
For steering and braking: XR6 (the xr8's are lead tipped arrows in comparison)
For straight line go: ..... depends.

Oh, and welcome to the forums.

Hmm.
What size cam can you use without having to change to an after market ECU?

Have a look at crow or wades site, I think they both list what cams will run on a stock ecu.
I'd say go the XR6, cheaper and easier to find in a manual.. normally.

Alright thanks I'll have a look.
I've found a few xr8's for around the 5k mark in manual.

Still trying to hunt down a decent xr6.

What's the real world fuel consumption like on both cars?

Because at the moment my jag is drinking about 22L/100km, more than my weekender.

welcome to the site.

Average fuel consumption for both (aprox):

xr6 12L/ 100km's
xr8 14L/ 100km's

Of course those values will change with condition of motor, how heavy your foot is and if you do town/freeway driving. If your worried about fuel, then either car is going to do the job on gas. 8 or 6 simple. Insurance is going to bite you most likely as both are classed as sport cars. Id pick a worked 8 anyday, but if you dont plain to spend much except on basics, go the xr6 it has a bit more poke in stock form. At the end of day neither is gona be a weapon unless you go down the turbo for 6 or the worked route for 8. Your choice. Maybee have a look at some of the members cars to get an idea of what you want.

If the xr8s are in good nic take em for a spin.
Then find an xr6 - even if its way out of your price range and take it for a run and see which you prefer. That way you've made your own mind up and will be happy with whatever you choose ;)

I think the xr8 will chew thru a touch more fuel under normal driving conditions, and a fair bit more when up it. My EF futura hasnt gone over 15l/100km on the trip, and thats after skids n drags n shit. Ave is now 11.0l/100km 600-700kms a tank. I'ds say an 8 would be up a fair bit thirstier than that.

Fuel consumption isn't really a major concern as long as it's reasonable I'm happy.
I'm not really after a weapon as I already have a weekender that costs me enough already.

Just want something reliable that's a bit of fun to thrash around.

Thanks for replies.

Yeah I'm pretty keen on a manual EB xr6 but I want to sell my jag first because the driveway will be too cluttered otherwise.

Mmm.
EF Futura 5spd with a cam - 137rwkw - trip comp sat on about 12. And that car often hit 6k rpm.

6k revving and making 137rwkw? Something must've been built wrong there.

Manual 8s are a better cruiser I reckons, by a mile.
I've found the difference when doing freeway km's is absolutely nill between the 6 and the 8.
My stockish manual Sprint got easy 600+ to a tank on the open road.
From memory 650 on the way back from canberra, with AC on full the whole way, and a couple of overtaking spurts ;)
6 is cheaper to get moderate power, though a decent cam will **** the economy in them.

Im with the above.
V8, sounds great, expensive for upgrades
I6, quicker, cheap upgrades.
Fuel consumption shouldnt matter, if your worried about it, a Falcon probably isnt the best thing for you, unless its on gas.

Welcome to the forums, are you still using your footrest? :P

If you have to ask between the 6 and 8, go the 6. The basic bolt-on mods are a lot cheaper, and if you want to spend a few thousand on it, you can always turbo it. Fuel economy is pretty much the same between the 6 & 8, it all depends how you drive, and the tune of the engine. I've got 650km to a tank in my EF V8 auto heaps of times on the highway, doing 120-130.

As said above though, a V8 manual would make a cool, fun cruiser. Plus they sound heaps better ;)

Why? had a mild cam, port n polish job, extractors and exhaust. It shouldnt have hit 6k, it still had the stock computer, but it revved off the gauge.

As I said before fuel economy isn't really a major concern. I just want a new daily that's reliable and bit of fun to thrash around.
I'm not looking for another project I'll maybe spend 5k max on little mods here and there other than that it will be pretty stock standard.

My only real must is it has to be manual and LSD. I don't really do alot of highway driving and my right foot weighs a ton.

Ahh. Not sure, cars sold now. dyno sheet went with the car. I *think* it made max power at a bit over 5000rpm.. maybe 5300?

meh..

Go the 8 if you've got the dosh to spruce it up a bit, heads, cam, intake and exhaust should get one up and going pretty well :)

He's stated he's got $5k to play with...

Exhaust - $800-2000 depending on single/twin, mild/stainless, etc.
Intake - $400-900 (just find a cheap explorer off an AU)
Cam - $400ish
Heads - $600-3000+
Labour, gaskets, etc etc etc... $???

Better news.

Jag is gone, EB fairmont is aquired.

I test drove 3 eb's this weekend,

First: an EB 5L fairmont, the add looked really good I went to look at it but the thing was fucking batterd to the max, dints all over it, I see why people chose the 6's over the 8's the v8 in stock form is rubbish.

Second: EB 4L fairmont 4spd auto, was alright clean, nothing special.

Third: Went to go see KNA.88's car and clean as, goes really well, has everything I wanted only thing missing is LSD so i'll put that in, some of you have probably seen it on the cruises, top notch, picked it up few hours ago. :D
