What car to buy??

Postby mooseman » September 10th, 2008, 10:40 pm

Im looking at buying a new vehicle in the sub-$5000 bracket. Im kinda over my manual EB shitheap. I want something thats going to be able to cart 4 people around reasonably comfortably and isn't too slow. Can't be too expensive to run either. I was thinking about just getting a different tidy auto EB/ED or an EF/EL but I can't stand the auto Eseries.

Any ideas?

Kester has a nice looking EF Futura manual with mods for sale. Check the for sale section.

EF/EL futuras in manual shouldnt be too hard to come across, and well under 5k.
Kesters EF is a good example of what you could pick up for $5k with a few good mods.

If I were to buy an EF or EL it would need to be an XR or Ghia.

XRs are a futura with <10kw more, a different diff and a kit. Woooooo.
By the time you add good springs and shocks you'll be ahead of an XR anyway.

All I really care about are looks and whats going to hold its value a little better. Im not looking for a heap of performance or anything just a nice clean stock EL/EF XR6 will do me fine! Who knows if im even going to buy a ford...

Sif you can even consider value with something worth less than $5k! Ok if you were spending over $20k, but with what you want to spend the value is well gone already, I'm sorry to say. If your really that worried, then go buy a Crummadore. Fools seem to pay more for them than Falcons anyway.

ooooh I want an XR, it has fancy headlights. The only difference between my Futura and my XR6 was the front end cost a hell of alot more when it hit a kangaroo, and it looked good.

As for suspension wise there is a slight variation between futura spec and tickford suspension, the top control arms on the diff are different, the front shocks have a peice of nolterthane rubber above the spring seat rubber in the top hat. And they have notherthane bushes right round.

Stop being such a pack of fucking stiffs. The Xr6 looks shitloads better. Has a nicer interior and isn't going to end up some shitty bitza.

What are the odds of finding an original, stock EL XR that hasn't been thrashed for under 5k?

There's so many options for 5k, you're best off opening carsales or something and have a look. Most mid sized cars (VW Golf, Corolla, Astra, Lancer etc) built in the mid-late 90's are at the 5k mark now, but so are decent AUII Futuras/Fairmonts, and 5k would buy a nicely modified XD-XE or VB-VK V8 on gas. Or a cheap E-Series on gas and a 4wd/dirt bike/road bike/mountain bike/boat/kayaks/buggy/guns/something thats more fun to spend money on then a daily driver.

People seem to buy BA XRs fairly often these days. They seem to be comning down in price more and more.
They're more than 5k but would hold their value better and have a waaay better ride.

Nah sorry dude im into doof but my last car before this one had a complete XR6 driveline from motor to diff and it still felt like a pissy fairmont. I think I will end up with something completely different. I can usually get cars alot cheaper through my mates dad that owns a car yard. I just wish he still had the MINT manual EL2 XR8 with sunroof and 95,000kms.... It was fucking MINT and I could have had it for $7000..... DAMN IT!!

Im more interested in a cruiser though. I would have picked up that EF Ghia (Mash's old one) that was on here in an instant if it wasn't sold already....

hahaha yeah. A $15k BA XR6 will hold it's value better than a $4k EL XR6.

I've heard people are getting low k BA MkII futura's at auctions up here in newcastle for $5500, a guy on fordmods rekons he almost got one for $4500 but the guy took a bid while he was hitting the hammer, he says he got an EL XR6 with some front end damage (only needed a new front bar) for $1200 also...

So maybe check some auctions??

1) How did it feel like a fairmont if it had the XR running gear... wouldn't that make it "feel" like an XR? The fact the seats were velour instead of cloth? Building upon this, I think Kester's Futura has an XR interior, so basically all you'd need would be the XR nosecone & bodykit & you've basically got yourself an XR6?

2) You say you're more interested in a cruiser, which is what a Fairmont is compared to an XR. Maybe look at MarkTD's DF? That'd be an orright cruiser.

Yeah but he ported the E7s with a wood dremel, & his idea of a shift kit is putting a bit of 25w/60 in the BTR

you know nothing

stick with the car you've got and save a bit more cash for a better car. nothing that cost 5k will hold its value well. nothing is wrong with a TX5turbo etc thats within your budget, even NF/L fairlane ghias can be had for under 5

Too late now lol. Its going on Saturday morning along with my EB. Traded both in for a Blueprint BA XR6 Turbo. Commando is right though. You could have had the DF for 6k if I knew earlier. It is a nice car to drive and is even lowered with dark window hehehe.

Buy a 5 litre VN, weld the diff and thrash the **** out of it. But seriously, as much as I hate them you can get mint 5l ones for next to **** all and there are stacks of stroker kits for them that aren't too expensive.

Agreed! I dunno why, but I really want to buy a muzz spec VN SS manual. Every second one for sale has 3.9s+spool, making them a great thrasher.
