Bad storm in Brisbane!

Postby Malakai » November 16th, 2008, 6:00 pm

Pretty crazy stuff, i literally couldn't see the houses on the other side of the street. Driving rain, hail, strong wind, power has gone off and there is two inches of water in my garage. I've never seen water like that in our garage.

Friends are telling me worse stories than mine, it sounds pretty bad out there.

I'm having to type this on my phone by candle light, evenything is dead..

What were you seeing during the storm and in the aftermath?

All sweet in my neck of the woods, bit of rain with some thunder and lightning nothing really exciting.

Looks like it was pretty bad in some areas though.

mmm seen that storm coming when i came outta work this arvo...looked pretty bad

we rarely get hit by the really bad storms here....they always branch off and go towards the coast or ipswich way......we just get rain and strong winds....and thats about it

I'm north side, we got off lightly really. Aparently Beenleigh and Logan copped it a lot worse. Here the hail was pea size but friends a few suburbs away say they saw golf balls. The power is still out.

My afternoon:

Swimming in the new pool at my gf's mum's house on 2 acres most of the arvo. It started out hot as Miranda Kerr and slowly became overcast. Looked over and saw the clouds getting darker, and further away some green ones. They were moving pretty slow so I wasn't concerned just yet. Within 10 minutes the wind went from nothing to blowing leaves outta the trees like a flock of birds just got a fright, and some really dark clouds were tumbling from over the house at pace. Then it started spitting. I launched outta the pool and bolted to the EL to park it under shelter. Just as were getting the gf's car in the Oz Barn the heavy rain - and I mean farken heavy - came bucketing down. The wind speed by now would've easily been 100k's. Within a minute the hail came. It was tiny, but there were 11ty billion pieces of it. Then we heard a massive thud, but had no idea what it was. The side door, which was right near the EL, was closed and got ripped open by the wind and the top hinge fell off. The EL was under the side carport and the hail was coming under sideways and hitting the rear. My gf's bro got some towels and doonas and we covered the back and passenger sides. After that I helped him secure the door and then we stood around for a bit, in what was now about 50 mil of flowing muddy water, making sure the EL wasn't gonna get smashed. Then he spotted what made the huge thud noise: one of the big gums down the back had fallen over. By now there were branches everywhere; heavy rain was going sideways; fark all visibility; lightening constantly everywhere; and the long driveway was now a stream. We ran up to the house, hoping not to get taken out by a tree on the way. I checked on my phone which was on the table outside, and it was covered in beads of water. No damage that I could see, but I had to suck the water out of the 3.5mm socket. The power to the property was out. After about 20 minutes it turned into a regular storm.

Later on tonight after dinner I went down to the shed to get the cars out so we could go home. Button clutch + shit tyres + incline + sharp turn + deeply rutted mud = mission. With my gf's bro's help I eventually got it out and I drove up the driveway a bit with the high beams on so he could check out the condition of the driveway. The whole 30m was littered with branches, small and big. One had altered the current of the water and had created a hump, so I had to get a spade and level it. It's still raining which is making everything even more of a PITA. Everyone eventually got the driveway cleared and we packed up the cars and left. Driving down from the end of the long cul de sac very slowly, it looked like a warzone. Shit everywhere. You could see where people had dragged the huge branches off the street. We got about 150m down the road and had to stop. There were 2 trees across the road. I got out and had a slightly closer look to see if we could go 'round and noticed 2 things: one of the trees was laying from one yard to the fence in the yard on the other side; and there were powerlines dangling and laying over the trees. So we're going nowhere 'til tomorrow.

Holy crap Todd! What suburb were you in?

The power still isn't back on here. Work should be fun today without any power.

Finally made it home after a morning of tidying up the back yard. The area's still taped off coz the powerlines are still lying on the road and the trees. We drove under the tape and up onto the grass on the opposite side and managed to get out, with a bit of 4WD style slippery mud action. Energex had just started arriving and I don't think the liked us driving through. There's still shit everywhere on the drive to the highway. Saw some damaged rooves on the way down the street too.

Saw Channel 10 driving past so you'll probably see what I was talking about in my previous post at 5.

Just watched the news, had no idea it was so bad!

It was raining like buggery duing my drive home from Gozzas house yesterday arvo and the sky was properly green - twilight zone shit. The lightning was pretty crazy too - had a few that were like a strobe pointed straight at my eyes, absolutely blinding.

My place all OK though, except the entire kitchen floor was wet beacause I had left the window open. Win.

Anyone have any links to pics/footage of the storm?

No damage to any cars here but the gutter and down pipe on our patio was overwhelmed so much by the volume of water that it not only overflowed the gutter but it overflowed the other end of the roof up under the eaves. We got some water running down the inside of the glass sliding door at the peak of the rain.

We are going to have to upgrade the down pipes, the single 3" pipe down the end doesn't cut it obviously.

Actually... I'll see if I can get Revengelane's exhaust and put that in as the down pipe. There isn't enough water in the world to overwhelm it then.

Damm I was wondering why everyone was winging on the radio. I'm in wynnum and we got stuff all down here just some rain. My job site (redbank) had a trestle fallen over and some leaves around the joint but even that was nothing. Looks like the north side got hit pretty hard, glad I'm down here.

What a storm.I was a bestman at a wedding on Sunday and with a storm like that i'm not sure what Dave did to piss off mothernature. We ended up having photos in the Queen street mall.Nothing like being jerred from drunk back packers. It was raining that hard the the limo driver backed the stretch 300c into a cab.Could not see or hear us banging on the boot lid to stop. That was funny. At the reception the old Customs building leaked. The chairs which we were meant to sit at outside were blowing all over the place. It was a good wedding in the end.On the way home from it was like Amagetin trees all over the place and now power.Pull into our place and we have power and it looked nothing had happened.

The Olds are Overseas and I thought I'd better check there place. There was a very big branch broken off the tree in the front yars and it was lucky it fell left and not right as it would have hit dads car which my brother left out. Then I noticed next doors roof missing from the deck.O shit were is it.I found it 200m up the road and it sliced through a power line on the way.Doors blowing in on the garden shed.Looked better than the neighbours it was picked up and shredded to pieces.Thought I'd better check inside and the rain had come under tiles as it was going 90 degress. The ceiling in the kitchen and the wall is stained. Not sure what to do.Tried cleaning, made it better but I don't think I should tell my parents. The funny thing was they heard about it in New Zealand and rang.A small lie should make there stay better :?

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

You're not wrong there, it's amazing how fast it picked up. It looked like a blast wave from a massive explosion or something.

It rained heavily for most of the night last night. Yesterday was dry and warm... this weather is insane.

That vid you posted up of those blokes on the back deck is what I was watching at Morayfield. The only reason I wasn't filming it was coz I was protecting the EL.

We had a brownout last night. Woke up at about 2 to hear the telly in the bedroom making a noise like heavy drops of water were dripping on it. It was just a weird sound coming from the speakers from not having enough power to do anything properly, even though it was on standby. Haven't been in a brownout before so I got up switched everything off in case something decided to short.
