is it an auto? if so manual conversion or shift kit + 3.9diff (3.9 for el yeah?)

get a set of pacemaker extractors and a nice hi flow cat

and just do a decent service on it, new oil, filter, fuel filter, sparkplugs

should make you reasonably happy
So much RAM the motherboard twisted off the POST.

I lost 3 cylinders... but gained a turbo...

Full service Agreed.
A set of extractors and hi flow cat Agreed.
Bad assed cam.

then you can knock off the Scoobies as well.

Erm, not quite. But he will notice a hell of a difference in launch compared to standard!

skewy_33, if you want to beat others from off the line, you can't go past diff gears (3.9 or 4.11 ratio) and/or a manual conversion. If getting a manual conversion, 3.9s would be as short as you'd want to go.

If you do a search you'll find a lot of this has been covered in previous threads. Happy reading!

Cheers

These have been covered before (search.php is a very handy tool) but here's some basics:

1) Diff gears. Roll the dice with R31 skyline gears (just go for some 3.9s) and you can probably get some for $150ish. A diff shop should fit them for $350ish, with some shims on the pinion. Your existing bearings should be fine if your diff is behaving normally. so budget $500 for parts/labour. Your speedo will be out, but a Jaycar speedo calibrator (search for this too) will fix this.

2) Manual conversion. Check ebay, or the For Sale section of this forum & other forums for manual cars being wrecked out (or conversion kits being sold), prices vary.

personally id stay with the 3.45 diff the xr has and a high stall converter 2500rpm rather than a 3.9 diff.
good solid cam to pull strong from 2000 or so up with vernier cam gear.
lukey extractors & 2.5 exhaust system :P sick of pacemaker this and that....
electric water pump, no power steering (drain the fluid), no aircon and you will pick up heaps of power hehe.
run high octane fuel!!!!
J3 piggy back and a solid tune.
oh and Tweecer emailed me saying they dont have an australian distributor and are looking for one if anyone here is into their over priced gear....
hehe.
I told them australia got sick of waiting for them to sort the def files out and are now making our own :D
aka go jump.
project so far - bbm + jmm 3inch intake piping, stage3 crow s/c cam, electric thermo fans, 2.5 cat back, magnaflow high flow metal cat, lukey tri y headers, crane cams hi-6 ignition + lx91, 2bar and trc, zex nitrous, j3 ecu adapter, rising rate fpr, 10psi rated s/c, surge tank, tailshaft loop, slightly modified btr(till it breaks), O2 tuning system.

if all you're worried about is beating them holdens then all u need to do is own a ford haha, my el xr6 easily beats the holden 6's even when it was stock.

all ive done to mine is Genie extractors,Magnaflow hi-flo cat and Lukey 2.5" catback an the tunings been slightly altered to run better on premium and i couldnt be happier with how hard it goes!

ive seen a few 2500 stall converters on ebay lately, and there is a company in queensland that does them as well as jmm.
fitting one is a backyard job if you have an engine hoist, and if you talk to jason (galapogos01) viewtopic.php?f=16&t=267&p=167533#p165199
he is doing piggyback programmable chips which can sort associated eec hickups which may happen.
they are out there, but are rare compared to a lot of other stall converters....all the more reason to have one :-P
