Postby TUFEF » November 13th, 2007, 6:35 pm

Hey guys,
What dose it cost to get a new head gasket repare.
And is it worth changing the cam in a ef fairmont to a xr cam will it make a differance?

Chers!!!

Head Gasket, anywhere between $700-$1300 at a mechanics.

Not worth changing to an XR cam.

change the cam by all means, just don't bother with an XR cam. The difference would be a bees dick in performance. Wade cams do exchange cams for $135 and would see a decent improvement in power and torque, especially if you already have exhaust and intake mods.

Back in the day I changed my stock EB cam to an XR one. I noticed a very slight difference, but unless you're a tight arse first year apprentice it ain't worth the effort. Regrind is a way better idea.

AUII-III gaskets are steel, EF ones aren't and can blow out again. Make sure you get a decent head bolt kit as your std ones have most likely stretched over time (causing/due to head warpage).

If you reuse your existing head bolts and fit up an E-Series gasket, expect it to blow within 10,000kms or 3 months, whatever comes first.

If you take it to a mechanic, as Damo said, expect to pay between $700-$1300. I got charged $830 for the following:

* Labour (duh)
* Good quality head bolt kit (can't remember the brand)
* AUII-III gasket
* Head checked & decked (shaved flat again)

Don't drive around with a blown gasket for too long, because one day it may hydraulically lock on you. Mine hydro-locked the day it wentto the mechanics lol

If you intend to do it yourself, make sure the head is in good nick (take it somewhere to be checked, - and if required - decked), this should cost a couple of hundred. No point in refitting a warped head!

If you are cheap and awesome you can do dodgy kent styles headgasket ;)
As long as the motor overheating isn't the cause of the headgasket blowing, and you take the head off when the engine is dead cold, the heads are sometimes okay (surprises are exciting!).
Get a straight edge, double check its warpedness, realise your straight edge isn't long enough and say "flat enough", I like new headbolts but others don't even do that (mad dogs), clean block with orbital sander, scrape head down (alloy is soft yo), then use a fibre type cheap headgasket (not only for cheapness, AU MLS style are more sensitive to warped heads, fibre type ones love it), slap it all together, flush coolant, new oil.
Guaranteed to at least 25,000kms, cause thats what mines done :lol:
Cost? Trade price = under 100 dollaro.
Don't come to me crying if it fails but :D

We did one for $26 once and have done many others for under $100-$150. Nothing wrong with doing it that way. If you know your way around these motors you can get away with doing a lot of sht on the cheap.

ah, if they've just fixed the headgasket, then the radiator has blown, go back to them and tell them you want it covered by warranty, they can't tell you they didn't do anything with the cooling system...cos they clearly did! ;)

What if he doesn't have a warranty ;)

I'm assuming the quote won't say anything about the cooling system in its entirety, just the head/headgasket area.

Otherwise someone with a farked heater core could go in, request a radiator cap to be replaced, then say (after the radiator cap is replaced) "hey, my system is still farked, I didn't pay $1 for a cap and $0.50 in labour to have a farked system. Fix my heater core under 'warranty' kents"

Well, if they've done the headgasket, then they really should have had the radiator flushed and checked, if they haven't then i would have thought it would be they're fault for not doing so..then again in the same instance they can say they didn't touch it so it's not they're problem so basically i retract my previous post hehe. EF radiators are cheap anyway (i think i got mine for $140), that's probably the easiest option and they're very simple to fit
