AU Fairlane??

Have you gone out n driven any cars yet? Even if theyre too much/too many k's, just go and drive a couple to get the feel of them.
I'd also recommend an AU 'Lane. They dont really have the 'curveness' of the SWB sedans, especially in the rear quarters.

I'd have to agree with others who say that the AU is a good buy. Mechanically it is basically what the e-series should have been, where they finally got it all just about right. Shame they put these great mechanicals into a rather unusual looking bodyshell (yes, I am aware I drive an ugly AU). The Fairlanes were definitely one of the better looking AUs, and they have awesome interiors.

Yeah, with the amount of feedback pro-fairlane they seem like the better car. We're probably gonna lean towards a low kms one, which will go for just as long as a BA/BF, but with style and comfort.

the AU tranny in my mates s2 futura and fairmont s1 is gayer than aids... but i drive manual so meh, but i love lanes man they're so much nicer to drive... and i drove an NC v8 for 8 months on P plates 20km to work every day, got picked up when i took a road trip through seymour one night and the copper didnt seem to mind lol

It's mostly going to be my Mum driving, so the tranny isn't much of a concern for us. Yeah some cops are realistic, I mean a Falcon with a six would be faster than an NC with a V8.

Not sure that there'd be much in it mate, in fact the ED might even be in with a chance being a lighter base model.

The advantages of the V8 are:
* Noticably better performance and fuel economy under heavy towing conditions only
* No head gasket dramas
* More N/A aftermarket potential, if that's your thing
* Full sick factor (tm)

I'll just go off some figures I have handy
EF GLi 4.0 with 3.08 diff = 0-100 in 8.9, 0-400 in 16.6 and 100-130 in 6.8
EF Fairmont Ghia 5.0 with 3.23 diff = 0-100 in 9.8, 0-400 in 17.2 and 100-130 in 7.5

So I'd imagine itd be a pretty similar story one model prior and probably even worse with a lane...

Unless figures are obtained on the same track by the same driver under identical conditions, they are no better than 'cost I said so'. Variables include driving style, temperature, surface grip and additional weight (fuel, passengers).

If you have the time, you'd probably get at least a couple of grand more selling the Astra privately compared to trade-in. The Red Book site is not working for me currently so I can't give any estimates.

Also, as someone else pointed out already that sort of money does buy a BA Fairlane, which would put to rest the Futura vs Fairlane thing. I hadn't looked up prices recently but BA Fairlanes start at $5-8k for ex-taxi and high-km examples, then $11-15 for good examples (such as this G220) and max out little over $20k.That price is the starting point for BFs.

Yeah i'd be banking on a straight swap for a $8k Fairlane on the road from a caryard. They will turn around an put the Astra for $12k perhaps. Make a bit of $$.

Amazing how prolific this is at the moment. Looked at 5 cars in the last few weeks - 3 were ex-limos with wound back kays, 1 ex-write off and 1 in worse condition than your average EA.
