No, and why? Falcon steering wheels are huge.

It would be worth your while to find a Laser forum and have a browse on there.

I imagine that sort of job would be best left to a project car and not your first/daily driver.

If you start hacking away at panels youve lost any possible resale should you change your mind and want a falcon instead.

Just made the decision to sell mine and get something half decent. I simply don't have the time and money to be stuffing around with cars. So If you're after a first car then cheap and reliable is the way to go. Even a little bulletproof econobox would suffice.

If you could afford it, I say get a BA as your first car. AU's are fair ugly but they're not bad for reliability either.

My first (and current) car's not that reliable, and not great on fuel economy. :/

Postby Jake » June 19th, 2011, 8:00 pm

My EF has gone a whole 4 weeks without a problem :D

Before that, for about a month or 2 strait I was spending around $100 a week fixing it....

Belt tensioner, battery, radiator, hose's, ball joints, exhaust, inhibitor switch, brake switch, power steering pump, spark plugs, leads, oil, tyres. I'm sure there is more I just cant think of at the moment. Coolant bottle and brake booster are 2 more things... and brake warning switch or something sort of sensor that has wires coming out of it on the brake master cylinder. and cruise control motor.

I've still had to buy tyres and brakes within the last 4 weeks though. And oil cos its burning through it at over a liter per 1000km's... The car is always chewing through tyres for some reason, keep getting alignments and they seem to get knocked out too easy or something.

My car has 380,000km's on it though so what can you expect? its old. It still goes hard, will still keep up with a V6 VY... so its doing ok... just small shit things that always need fixing.

I'd be better off taking out a loan on a $20,000 car and paying that off rather than spending all this money keeping my car on the road.

You have to expect those things, it's a 17 year old car. Try pricing up the same parts for a 17 year old Japanese or European car.

Most parts will fit. Do that.

You think that until you see the loan contract and that after all interest and service fees have been added in you pay back the bank $35,000. Plus you will still need, oil, tyres, rego, comp insurance $$$ and everything else that goes along with a car.

Try doing your own research. Don't buy an E-Series, otherwise you'll probably stay here. No-one wants that.

Ok, now we have a budget and aims. Get an AU (s2/3), it will suit your budget, and any bad-taste mods you throw at it. Might sound nasty but i'm being genuine.

cars i would consider if I were you:

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/pri ... 0812AB7B01

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/pri ... 0812AB7B01

Yes all ED Xr's because I like them. Look for low KMS, make sure it has no rust and a straight body. They were just examples as I have no idea where you live. Things that may cost you a lot after you have bought it is tyres and rego so make sure you check how much is left on both and factor that in. If it needs both then your looking at an extra $1000 pretty soon after.

Dont worry too much about if it already has LPG, even with the rebate been rolled back slightly you can get a good brand new system installed for $1000 out of pocket. You have to pay upfront but the government gives you back $1500 I think it is now.

EDIT: does the $5000 include mods you want to do and insurance you'll need to pay?

Have a look on gumtree, you will be sure to find something that you will like.
Some many not agree, but If I were you I would buy an EL XR6.
Have a good look on the build threads if you want to know what mods to buy, there are some very good examples of cars in there. :read:

AU might be uglier, but it's mechanically the newer better option. AUII and AUIII finally got a decent headgasket from factory, they got better brakes, brighter headlights (that don't yellow like EF/EL ones) and generally don't have much go wrong with them at all. I don't particularly like the AU lower-spec dash but the Fairmont/lane one is quite nice (although climate control screens do have problems). When talking about the exterior styling, you don't see it while you're driving it ;). When I was looking for a new cheap daily last year, I was looking at both EL and AU options and have no regrets with choosing the AU.

I meant they're generally similar.....but yeah you're absolutely right, I should be more pro-AU since we own one ;) they're definitely good cars

Having only owned the Ef for a week, and driven it all of 150k's I can't comment on a ford. However my background is 4wds, please don't be like every other unit that goes and buys a hilux, they are over priced generally, slow (ones in your price range will probably be the 2.4 petrol or 2.8 diesel) and prone to rolling, my sister rolled hers 3 times taking a gravel corner at 60

Do you want to go fast? Or off-road? That's the first thing

Honestly, an AU2/3 will be the best car for you. Cheap, better brakes than an E Series, and more reliable.

if i had 5k i would buy an EF XR8 =] but i dont

if u buy a daily car keep it as a daily otherwise ull have all sorts of problems once u start modding it

ie... off the road being worked on and then u have no car to drive!

just get an eb, ed or el and learn shit.
they are generally simple to fix and you will learn enough to fix most other cars later on.
parts are cheap and plentiful as are decent examples.
get one on gas to save on fuel and wing it for the rest lol
