Legal or not legal?

Postby cbacamden » February 22nd, 2008, 6:58 pm

Ive spent hours reading the various topics and while I know parts of my question have already been dealt with after reading them I am now a little confused on the topic of getting everything legal.

I live in NSW and have a EF xr6 manual with SVO turbo setup. At present it hasnt been engineered. I have done a bit or research with both the engineer and the haltech tuner and they recon I should be able to get everything legel if I am willing to spend the time and money to do so.

What does everyone think? A few peope told me that there is no way I will pass the emissions test? Others say that ill have to ugrade my brakes etc? (currently im running cross drilledand slotted discs with soft pads that work fine. Whats the truth ?

Insurance ? If I dont engineer and just decide to go stealth can I still be covered by insurance ?

I have no idea what to do :)

Thanks for your time !

An engineer would know more than a random person on the internet who isnt an engineer.

Your insurance would most likely have gotten you to agree to something along the lines of if you enhance your car, whether performance-wise or aesthetically, we wont cover you for shit if something goes wrong. Thats what I was told by Just Car.
With the engineers certificates, they are only necessary if you decide to sell the car with the turbo kit on. << I may be wrong here

Im just about to have my EF turbo fully roadworthy and engineered over here in WA. My car managed to pass the emissions testing required, unless the engineer requires you to upgrade your brakes there's no need...... As far as insurance goes, I wouldnt be covered until its roadworthy..... any other questions PM me

cheers,
Matt

u should be able to get it engineered with all the after market shit as long as it meets the rta standards according to nsw rules and regs which are pretty tight. if u just go down to the rta you should be able to get all the stats on wats right and wrong but as long as that all lines up then yer u can get it all legal.

as for insurance with out the engineers cert u can pretty much forget it and evan if u get one they will probly depending on your age drivin record etc still not give it to you unless u bullshit to em and tell em its stock. but if they ever find out (if u crash or it gets stolen) if there assesor sees that it is turbo it will void your insurance

It sure ant easy to findout what you can and cannot do but im slowly getting there.

and its rea encouaging to hear that some have been able to pass the emmissions test.

Thanks for your input guys - its all a great help ! and ill try to keep posting letting people know what im up to.

First suprise I had today was being able to get third party proprty cover with AAMI without the mods being engineered. I really hope I have been told the right thing, but i did get them to go and check with a supervisor and got them to quote their poicy wording. So according to what I have been told as long as the mods ae all disclosed then I am covered. I know this is not the case with other insurers so im still a bit suprised.

I know it doesnt cover if someone gets hurt etc, but at least if i go off the road and crash through a house etc :) then maybe the property damage is covered. :)

Sorry guys I have given up:(

The engineering stuff was going to be fine - but the emissions ended up being a real prob. To maybe pass I was informed I would need to spend another $3000 to get it past and I simply dont have the money to do that as I need the cash for a new business venture. So she's up for sale on ebay.

If it doesnt sell - im gunna go to the exhaust place and get it so I can quickly change from turbo to standard as needed :)

It was great great fun while it lasted :)
