Funny as AFF wanker!

Postby Gunns » March 3rd, 2008, 1:39 pm

Inspired by the "Rear-Mount" turbo, I starting thinking of alternative ways to compress air and get it into the engine. What I came up with was something entirely unconventional, heavier than it has to be, but good for instant boost, WTF factor, and weight distribution (In the case of RWD drag cars).

Basically an supercharger, battery system, motors, etc, mounted in the boot. Ideally in a common frame for quick removal if you need to go somewhere.

The batteries would be charged by the vehicles alternator when not in use, and may be connected in series when being used, so you can use less amperage for the same power output (has heat and wiring advantages). I should mention that a REAL blower like an M90 would be used, and the motors will sure as hell draw more than 30 amps (try somewhere between 500 and 900).

Thoughts?

Imagine the piping from the boot allllll the way to the intake manifold! Not to mention how the feck it sucks in air in the first place... I'm sure that immense piping length would have SOME kind of impact on the "instant boost" lololol

I assume that's in the OzECruisers section based on the fact I can't access it. Sadly, I am not surprised it has popped up there...

it kind of reminds me of a pic of an american with a 240v through wall air conditioner mounted to the cars window with a petrol generator bolted to the back.

Yeah, but that's with a turbo with housings/trims which suit being rear-mounted. I'm not that well versed in the ways of the rear-mounted turbo (or rear-mounting, unlike OzECruisers :P), but I recall them being quite unlike a conventional turbo in the engine bay.

I think he's gonna go the cheapest option and get the biggest barbie hairdryer he can matched with a 950w GMC generator in the boot
while pumping freshly cooled air from the Aircon direct to the intake on the hair dryer

Rear mount turbos = good idea, if theres a reason.
Rear mount electrical motor powered M90s = bad idea, reason or not.

Yes rear mounting turbo's can be quite effective, but turbo's and whipple type blowers are efficient because they actually compress the air in the motion of it passing through them. The POS eatons don't, they essentially create boost when they force air against a chamber, therefore rear-mounting it will just end up being retarded. And battery driven? ROFL, lost **** needs to lay off the green.

lol, good point. I did have another reply typed up, but just left it, I feel dumberer just reading that thread.

Maybe McLaren or Williams can hire him to develop their new KERS devices for next years F1 season.

One of the main reasons rear mount turbos work is so they can mount a massive fvck-off water-air intercooler in the boot or back seat.
