Oh, and there was the time (many many years ago now) that I spotted a sign with my name on it at about 2am, 50km's away from any from of civilisation. I had a friend with me, so we pulled a burnout and turned around, and flew back to where it was, pulled out the tools and shimmied up the pole to get it off. We also had a collection of about 10 road-works signs sitting on the back seat, covered up with a few jumpers and a pizza box, it was just one of those nights. After about 15 minutes, we realised we weren't going to get it off without a hacksaw, and I'd already lost a couple of spanners in the grass, so we gave up. I did another u-turn, smoked em up, did a few side to sides, and then accelerated back up to the speed limit... at which point I saw a car come over the hill, and then on came the party lights...
He comes up to the window after pulling us over and says
"Evening mate.... first things first, it's 2am, there's no-one around, most people sit on 130 on this stretch... and you're doing 80km/h! What's going on? Have you been drinking?!"
Turns out the radar got me as I was still accelerating away from my burnout!
"Nah mate, I'm just a bit tired, and there's roo's along this few kays sometimes, just trying to be careful"
EDIT: I later realised it was part of my licence conditions that I should have been doing 80km/h anyways, I just forgot whilst I was talking to him because I never adhered to it.
"So did you guys have pizza tonight?" he says looking in the back seat.
I shit bricks, thinking he's seen the signs.
"Yeah mate, there's still a few bits left, you want some?"
"Awwwww... nah probably shouldn't, watchin my weight hahahaha"
"Oh well, it was pretty good, we'll probably eat it for breakfast"
"That's ok fella's, have a safe trip, I'm the only one out here tonight so once the roos are gone, you can cruise back up to 100-120 and you'll be fine."
And we were on our way. We were so lucky we stopped for the sign, we were cruising at about 180-200km/h before that, and I swear he would have been able to see all the smoke from our U-turn efforts when he went to pull one himself, so maybe he was having a good night. I pulled my head in after that, it was way way too close.
