In the 1950s, the US Fairlane was being sold in Australia, and by the early 1960s, it was assembled here. Then, in March 1967, a locally designed and built Fairlane was released. Based on the XR Falcon, the Fairlane was an immediate success in the luxury car market.
ZA Fairlane(1967 - 1968)
ZA’s designers took the Falcon wheelbase and stretched it (this wheelbase was later used on the XA Falcon wagon). The XR’s doors were retained, while the rear quarter panels and bootlids were borrowed from the US model.
Fairlane was powered by the Super Pursuit six cylinder; Fairlane 500 had the 289 V8.
The interior of the Fairlane retained the bench seat, with the 500 scoring reclining bucket seats. All the extra space of the bigger body went into the cavernous rear compartment. Both models were fully carpeted and the 500 had luxurious fake wood described as “an attractive walnut finish applique.”
