XM Falcon(1964 - 1965)
XM was launched in February 1964 at that very test circuit, and the press were shown how tough the Falcon really was.
Promoted as “The Golden Quality Falcon,” the XM had many improvements. Styling changes included a facelifted sheet metal nose, making the car squarer and lower looking. The grille was divided into 8 rectangles and there was plenty of chrome.
An elegant 2-door coupe was introduced, known as the Hardtop. The unpopular Squire was still being offered.
Under the bonnet, big changes were made, the most notable being the new Super Pursuit engine: 200 cubic inches, producing 121bhp. The XM had three other engine choices: the standard 144 and the Pursuit 170, both of which enjoyed power increases, and a 144 low compression engine, available on special order. The Super Pursuit manual was able to reach 0 - 100 km/h in 11.1 seconds.
The suspension problems were gone, with stronger balljoints used. The springs and shock absorbers had heavy duty rubber insulation and new mountings.
This model was a great improvement, but fleet buyers couldn’t be convinced, after their encounters with XK and XL.

XM was the first Falcon developed to withstand Australia’s rugged conditions. South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula was chosen as a proving ground, where XM prototypes were punished and resulted in 1500 modifications at a cost of £1 million.
